The largest single activity in the group is related to understanding thermal distribution systems in buildings, especially air distribution (i.e. ducts). The growth in this area is attributable to the interests of the California Institute for Energy Efficiency which has been the dominant funder during the growth phases of this project.
Early work in houses demonstrated a large potential energy savings in houses. Existing duct systems typically are only 50-75% efficient depending on the climate, the location of these ducts, and their leakage and insulation levels. A recently patented aerosol sealing technology has demonstrated great promise and is undergoing commercialization. Duct efficiency in new construction is being addressed through standards and rating system in a collaborative venture with states, and professional organizations.
For general information on the topic of residential thermal energy distribution systems see the Thermal Energy Distribution Homepage.
